When you're working, going to school or being a caretaker full time, being able to learn at home is hard to beat!

Why I created these courses

When I decided to learn Hawaiian as an adult, there were two options. Take Hawaiian 101 for about $5,000 or buy a few books under $100 and start teaching myself.

My wife and I were recently married. I was working. She was a full time student and had a part time job. As you can imagine, there wasn't much money floating around! We had to start learning on a budget.

We didn't have a teacher or mentor of any kind so we were left to our own devices. I also had to search high and low for authentic and sources to learn from.

There had to be a better way! Our experience was a huge motivation in creating these courses.

Student Testimonials

Shelby

"It’s so nice to be able to learn on your own time - I love that everything is prerecorded and easily accessible."

Kealohi

"It's nice understanding why some things are, like when to use No ___ mai au vs No ___ nei au since I never understood why some speakers use one vs the other and I thought it meant something totally different."

Mahele 1: Foundational Hawaiian

Many students come to me from a methodology where grammar is everything. They end up learning English grammar and have no real ability to use the language. They often have a large vocabulary but can't use it because they are confused by the grammatical terms.

To address these issues, I intentionally chose Layman's terms in my course. I also focus on expressions over vocabulary. There are far more words than expressions in every language. You can have all the vocabulary in the world and not know how to use it.

The course is easy to follow with no added fluff. I want my students to become users of the language, not grammatical wizards.

Enroll in this course if you:
  • Have zero experience in the language.
  • Want to connect to culture.
  • Need a refresher on the basics and want to build on that.
  • Need direction on what to study.

Student Testimonials

Kapua

"The videos made a significant difference for me. I am able to watch them as many times as needed to understand the lesson and listen to pronunciation. It encourages me to say it out loud. Before then I just read the text but never spoke it out loud."

Asher

"It has definitely improved my language ability and helped me connect more to family who speak olelo Hawaii. I also think that speaking conversationally alone has improved my ability for viewing the world with a more Hawaiian world view."

Kaeo

"The fact is, you care about our growth as a person through olelo Hawaii. That is something you cannot get from other courses. You can relate to some of the challenges of learning a new language. The greatest takeaway is to be proud of who you are and you make learning fun!"

Mahele 2: Building Fluency

Have you wondered how to become conversational? This course was made with the intent to supply you with the essentials for conversation.

Students that come from a classroom setting may be literate but have little knowledge of the spoken language. Spoken Hawaiian is a different form of the language you have to learn.

In this course you'll learn the common expressions used in conversation. Pay close attention to the dialogues in the course. They take an expression and show you how it can be used.

Take this course if you:
  • Need to build on your basic foundation.
  • Want to learn spoken Hawaiian.
  • Feel like you don't know enough to start speaking.
